The basic concept for Designer Information Services (DIS) was formed in 1963 from recognition that manufacturers of specifiable building products needed a less expensive, yet effective means of reaching architects, and that the architect's time, being limited, required a way to stay up-to-date with current product information. The founder of DIS recognized this and fused the two challenges into a service that visited architects with multiple, non-competing products in a disciplined amount of time each visit. This service, begun from a home in Los Angeles, California, grew to become the Designer Information Services of today with services available throughout the West Coast Region including California, Washington, Oregon and Idaho, the Midwest including Illinois, Southern Wisconsin and Northern Indiana and the State of Florida. What began as a modest number of architectural visits each year in Southern California grew to become 9600 visits each year across the United States with the expectation of more to be added to those numbers as the company grows to meet the needs of the industry.
As Designer Information Services grows, great care is given to the quality of the services provided to both manufacturers and designers. Each Architectural Representative who calls on the designers is thoroughly screened for communication skills and is trained in how to properly present a group of products in a manner that respects the architect’s time and the manufacturer's need for a professional presentation and effective report for each visit made. In addition, each Architectural Representative is backed by a team that constantly reviews the quality of the reports produced, feeding back ideas and adjustments that keep their work focused on excellence. The overall result is that both the manufacturer and the architect receive professional, effective communications regarding products and product application opportunities.
